Spine titling is a desirable addition to any bound document—it is the reason we created the PowisPrinter®. Spine titling looks more professional and makes documents easier to identify when they are lined up on a bookshelf. For hardbound books, spine titles can be created using Foilfast® Title sheets. This is a relatively easy process. To help you create your own spine titles, we have created Microsoft Word templates for all book widths A through F.

The following tutorial will show you how to use these templates. For this example, we will use the D width example (file name: “D width spines”).

The first thing you will notice about the spine title files is that the title information for each spine is enclosed in a separate text box. This is to ensure that the distance between the trim dots remains constant. The trim dots are the dots along the right and left edges of the sheet. The dots indicate where the spine pieces should trim. These dots are small enough to avoid interfering with the appearance of the spines, but large enough to be easily seen. As long as you do not change the font size or paragraph spacing of the base document, you can change the font sizes in the text boxes without affecting the trim dots.

Each spine is designed to match the style used by the PowisPrinter®. There is a top middle and bottom. These are very simple, text-only spines. With a more sophisticated graphics program, such as Adobe Illustrator, you can create spines that include graphics (and we will discuss this in a future tutorial).

Spines C through F are set in 16 pt. Arial plain; the A width spines are set in 10 pt. Arial, and the B width spines are set in 12 pt. Arial. Typefaces and styles can be changed without adjusting the file, although some text sizes may be too large for certain spines widths. Changes in type sizes may also require the text boxes to be moved up slightly to keep the text centered on the spines.

Highlight the words ‘Powis Parker’ that appear on the left side of the first text box and type in ‘Edison Industries.’

Highlight the words ‘Foilfast Title Sheet Spine Template’ that appear in the center of the first text box and type in ‘Manufacturing Proposal.’
Highlight the words ‘Powis Parker’ that appear on the right side of the first text box and type in ‘November 2003.’

The spine sheet is now ready print in one color of foil. Unlike the cover, there is no need to choose ‘Upside Down’ when printing the spines. Type styles and typefaces can be mixed and matched. On some of the templates, you may get a message that part of the image is outside the printing area of the Foilfast® printer. This was done to ensure that the maximum number of spine titles appear on each page. It will not affect the printing of the spines.

The templates are black and white. To print in one color of foil they can be used as is with the desired color chosen in the ‘Properties’ window. To print them in multiple colors, the type must be assigned appropriate colors and the desired colors must be chosen in the ‘Properties’ window..

Note: If you do print in multiple colors, remember to either change the color of the dots to one of the colors that will print on the spines (red in the example), or select black as one of the colors that will print.

Once the spine title is printed, trim each spine title out along the trim dots. You can either trim the spines manually with a ruler and an Xacto knife, or you can use a paper cutter. The best choice for trimming spines is a rotary paper trimmer (Fiskars makes several good models). To attach the spine, peel back the top edge of the spine piece approximately ½”.
Position the spine on the cover so that it is centered all around. Once you are sure of the position, press down the exposed portion of the spine to pin it to the cover.

Peel the release paper from the spine piece, and finishing attaching the spine title to the cover, being careful to keep the spine title centered.

Note: Extra care should be used when attaching the smaller (A and B) width spine titles as these are easily misaligned.

That’s all there is to it! In spite of their simplicity, these templates can produce beautiful results. If you come up with a particular useful idea, we’d love to hear about it.
